Have You Made Surfing Your Lifestyle

There is a saying, “Once a Surfer Always a Surfer!” Is there a definition of a surfer? Are you a surfer? Would you like to become one?

Surfers don’t all have long blond hair like they were pictured in the movie Gidget. Surfers are from all walks of life. You can’t tell a surfer by looking at him or her, but you sure can tell by talking to them. They are tall, short, young, old, skinny, fat, high school dropouts, PHD’s, girls, guys, blacks, browns, Asians, Europeans, Brazilian, Australians, you name it and that’s what they are, Surfers!

What do surfers want most? For sure, it’s not a car, truck, fancy house, or fancy clothes. They want surf and they want a surfboard type to ride the surf because that is where they thrive. That is where they are at home and comfortable, in the water with waves and the perfect surfboard type for the waves. Surfers are most happy, paddling to catch a wave, standing on their surfboard shooting across the wave, making cutbacks, feeling the exhilaration and freedom from the speed and salt spray thrown up by their surfboard.

Surfers aren’t looking for fame or fortune, even though a lot of them have those things. Their driving force is the search for good waves. When you have good waves, you are rich; how simple, but how true.

Surfers learn to turn good waves into good vibes in life. This applies to kids in school, working adults, retired baby boomers and anyone who gets in the water on their surfboard, bodyboard, skimboard, SUP or any other surfing vehicle.

We are all surfing through life, but most of the population does not know or realize this. We should all take the surfing vibrations into everything we do. When you Surf Life, you are surfing good vibes, just like being on a wonderful fast moving wall of water called a wave. You feel the spirit of the wave or the vibe from it. This spirit permeates into whatever you are doing, whether it is driving on a freeway, dealing with a certain situation or working in your office. You develop freedom for stress and conflict. You turn everyday things into fun and excitement.

If you learn to take the ecstasy of surfing into your relationships, they become fun and special. Whether it is with your girlfriend, boyfriend, kids, or wife, things become pleasant and mellow.

I think that everyone wants happiness in their lives. One of the best ways is through surfing. Surfing brings happiness into the lives of millions around the world. Riding waves, hanging out on the beach with your friends, talking with them about your last surfing session, and taking these feelings into your everyday life is what the surfing lifestyle is all about.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you never had to put on a suit and tie again and you could go to work in your aloha shirt? Wouldn’t it be nice if you never had to wear shoes and you could just wear your flip flops, sandals or thongs every day? Well, this is what a lot of people do. They have taken the “surfing culture” and lifestyle and put it into their daily lives.

Surfers typically drive a truck, van or a vehicle with surfboard racks on the top. Most often, they will have their special surfboard with them so that when they get a break they can go to the beach, lake or body of water to do what they enjoy best. They have their towel and beach gear in their vehicle. Can you picture yourself living like this? Do you think that the stress levels will be less if you apply these attitudes and principles?

Many surfers also carry a small little musical instrument around with them called the ukulele. This is an instrument that is easy to play and most everyone can learn to play it in a very short period of time. There is nothing like sitting around in your living room or on the beach, either by yourself or with your friends, playing your uke and singing songs. This is a part of the surfing lifestyle. What a joy!

So my friends, you can see that living the surfing lifestyle is a way to change your life and a way to bring happiness into every part of your life. Do it! Surf Life forever!

The Importance of Using the Right Surfing Equipment

Surfing is an exciting water sport involving skillfully riding the water with the help of special equipment, generally referred to as a surfboard. Surfing requires strong enough waves to carry the surfer to the shore, which means that the usual locations where surfing is practiced are beaches with opening to the ocean. Surfing is an interesting sport that has many variations and can be done with different equipment including nipper boards, standup piffle boards, wave skis, surfboards, longboards, body-boards, skim-boards, surf mats and kneeboards.

Whether you enjoy stand-up surfing, body surfing or paddle boarding, you require the proper equipment to ensure you will achieve the proper stance without losing your balance. Originally made from wood, boards are nowadays made from fiberglass foam and polyester resin. Recently, many surfing boards manufacturers use epoxy resin and expanded polystyrene in combination with carbon fiber to create more resistant and lighter boards. This means that they will float better than traditional boards and help the user achieve the ultimate surfing experience. Even though they are lighter, easier to use and faster on water, traditional surfboards are still preferred by professional surfer to epoxy surfboards, because they offer a greater feedback.

Depending on your purpose, better speed or balance, it is important to choose the right surfing board. The materials, thickness and size of a board will influence its characteristics and will make it more suitable for a certain type of surfing style. There is a great difference between the surfing boards used by adults and kids. It is important to use a custom made board to ensure it will handle your weight and height and for a better equilibrium. You can also see the difference between the boards used by the safeguards and by nippers. Young surf lifesavers use a special nippers board, while adults need bigger and heavier ones. While surfing is a game of balance and the gravity and waves will work against you, it is essential to start the ride with the right board, to ensure you will have the advantage and the ability to tame the wave.

Nothing compares with surfing experience and many passionate surfers practice this sport all year round, irrespective of the weather. Keeping this in mind, you will know that simply owning a surfboard is not enough to practice this sport. In summer you can simply wear surf trunks, while a wetsuit, hoods, gloves and boots are needed to offer protection against cold temperatures. You will probably also require a leash for your board to ensure it will not drift away and hit other people. Surf wax, fins and traction pads are also required as part of the equipment. The traction pads will keep you from slipping, so you need to make sure they fit your size. Having the proper equipment is important for any sport and you cannot handle the waves without a surfboard customized to fit your height, weight and ability or without the special sportswear when the freezing waters would leave you out cold.

The History of Water Sports

Swimming is noted in many of the classics as relating to heroism and religion. Nicolas Wynman’s Dialogue Concerning the Art of Swimming (1538) is the first recorded written document on swimming methods. Swimming first appeared in the Olympics in 1896, paralleled to the development of the swimming pool. Swimming the English Channel is the most publicized non-Olympic event. It proves excellence in strength and endurance. Matthew Webb from England was the first man to cross the English Channel in 1875, and later Gertrude Ederle of the Unites States of America became the first woman to cross in 1926.

Snorkeling to view exotic fish and aquamarine life is a much-loved vacation adventure. In ancient times snorkels were crafted from hollow reeds found in lakes and marshes. Pliny the Elder, a first century A.D. Roman makes reference to the snorkel, so the activity holds rank as one of the oldest recorded water sports. Loenardo da Vinci created a more modern snorkel when the Venetian senate summonsed him to do so. Divers attached this hollow tube to leather helmets
The present-day diver’s snorkel is typically a J-shaped tube that is open at the top and has a mouthpiece at the other end, usually no more than 2 ft (61 cm) long.

American West-coasters go wild riding the waves on a wooden plank known as a surfboard. Originally, surfing developed in Hawaii in the nineteenth century. It became popular in California in the 1920s, and became a hit youth sport in the 1960s.

Surfers originally used long, cumbersome wooden boards but now ride lightweight synthetic boards that allow a greater degree of maneuverability. Hawaii holds annual international surfing championships.

Water polo originated in England in 1870, and American joined the bandwagon in the early 1900s. Many club and college teams exist for this rigorous sport. Americans gave the game a twist by using a softer rubber ball in a larger pool, a game known as softball water polo. Violence and rough play ended this faction of the sport, and today only the hardball version continues to be played worldwide. Men began Olympic level water polo in 1900, and women first played in the Olympics in 2000.

Diving, another favorite Olympic sport, initiated competition in 1871 off the London Bridge. Diving is now a popular sport at the high school and collegiate level, and is an amazing display of strength, control and agility.

 

Surfing Water Sports

Bodyboarding is a “complete” surfing water sport. It requires the use of your whole body, though depending on your level of riding you may need to be more aware of and condition different muscle groups.

The leg muscles are the first group you will want to condition. Used for swimming from shore out to where the waves break, paddling into waves, and also as leverage for turning while riding the waves. Leg positioning and movement during high performance bodyboarding tricks is also used to control your momentum. No leg strength or stamina makes for a very short surf session.

I am including the feet here because sometimes you may get foot cramps when swimming. In my experience this is usually an effect of either your bodyboarding fins not fitting properly or leg muscles tightening up from overuse /exhaustion which in turn pulls on the muscles in your feet.

The arms are typically used for paddling, though not as exclusively as with traditional surfing. Personally, I use arm paddling primarily to give the legs a rest from kicking during extended “paddle outs” or for extra boosts of speed when paddling for a wave. Arm strength will also be needed for performing advanced bodyboarding maneuvers that are exclusive to this water sport since you must hold on to your board as you flip, twist, spin–sometimes all at the same time–and fall out of the sky when doing aerial moves.

Since for most riders the majority of the time will be spent lying with the stomach on the bodyboard, the “ab” muscles must be able to support and direct the weight of your body. Also, when doing advanced maneuvers like airs, rolls, ARS’s, and flips you will be freefalling onto your stomach. Strong abdominal muscles will help keep the wind from getting knocked out of you and the quick recovery you will make insures that you will not lose speed upon impact.

Weak stomach muscles will also put extra responsibility on the back muscles to absorb the impact of hard landings. If you find you have recurring back pain after doing advanced bodyboarding moves, I can tell you first hand that improving your ab strength may likely reduce or eliminate your back problems.

This brings us to the last group of muscles I will talk about…the back muscles. You should have a strong back regardless of your skill level, but advanced moves require a lot of twisting, arcing, and body english that can only be accomplished with a strong, flexible back.

So now that know what muscles to condition for this water sport, it’s time to start enjoying the wide world of surfing. Grab a board and fins, and go out and have a great bodyboarding session. Enjoy!

What Water Sports Products Are Available to a Surfer?

Every day surfers check the surf reports to find out what they can expect as far as tidal information, size of the waves, wind information, rain or sunshine, temperature of the air and the water, and time of sunrise and sunset, just to name a few. All of these conditions will determine what type of water activity and which of your water sport products you will need and want to take to the ocean, lake, pool or river.

There are various places to check the daily surf report. Go online and find a surf report site where you can get just about all of the information you need for any place in the world to make a decision on whether you will go surfing, paddling, swimming, rowing, skimming, body boarding, or taking the day off and doing something else. There are many of these sites. If you can’t get the information you need for your location, go to google.com or your local TV or newspaper for the current weather report.

What are the surfer’s water product categories and choices, you may ask? Depending on the surf conditions, you will have to choose the type surfboard you want to surf. Maybe you will want to take more than one type surfboard in case the conditions change. Do you need a wet suit to keep you warm? How about sun block, rash guard, board shorts, wax, surfboard leash, sweatshirt, hat, and dark glasses?

Normally these decisions are relatively easy, but they are important because if you have the wrong equipment or have forgotten to bring the proper surfboard for the conditions, you can ruin your day or have to double back home to get what you need. With the price of gas today, this could be an expensive and time consuming proposition.

Choosing the proper surfboard for the conditions and your skill level requires careful consideration especially when there are so many different types of surfboards to choose from. Here is a list of surfboards types for your consideration:

Each one of these surfboard types can be further broken down into sub-categories. I will discuss them in another article, but to give you an idea, the size of the waves will determine whether you want to ride your thruster, your fish, your quad or maybe even your funboard. You may even want to go for a paddle.

Looking at the list of surfboard types, although incomplete, gives you an idea as to why many surfers have more that 5 surfboards and sometimes as many as 20 different type surfboards in their quiver.

What kind of wetsuit will I need today, or will I even need one. Wetsuits come in all different types and thicknesses to suit the water and air temperature conditions. If the water is extremely cold, you may even want to wear a rubber hood and booties. In the winter, you will want a full wetsuit and one that is thick enough to keep you warm. As the weather starts warming up, surfers then have choices between wearing a full suit or a spring suit.

Spring wetsuits could be a full suit made from thin rubber or it could be one with any combination of sleeves, no sleeves, legs, no legs, or just the torso suit. There are also a wide variety of suits that have combinations of flexible rubber materials. You can go to your local surf shop and try on and test these different suits. Of course, there is also a wide price variance. As usual, you get what you pay for.

As you can surmise from this article, there is a very wide selection of water products that every surfer has to choose from. Choose wisely and in general try to get a good cross section of surfboard types, wetsuits, and your other water products that will make it possible to enjoy just about any water and surf condition that is given to you on any day.
